Tucson, spring 2014

After a quick visit with my sister in Redmond, OR, and very brief stops at Sacramento NWR, San Luis NWR, and Big Morongo I headed into Tucson for butterfly chasing. Birding too, of course. I saw lots of both and got a few good shots.

Southern California, spring 2013

The 2013 Southern Califonia trip went down along the Sierra range and through Yosemite. I spent a week in a vacation rental house in Yucca Valley, visiting Joshua Tree NP a couple times and Big Morongo Nature Preserve, plus other forays. The return took in the Big Bear Lake area, then over to the coast to Morro Bay and up through Big Sur. I explored the Clear Lake area north of SF, and the western side of the Sacramento Valley back to Redding, and then the Umpqua River valley in Oregon.

Southern California

image Southern California April, 2012 Down to southern California for sunshine and touring. There was plenty of sunshine, but some spring rains, too, making the desert greener than usual.

Northern California

image California, Oregon May, 2011 For a long time I've wanted to explore southern Oregon and Northern California as I had only driven through the area a long time ago.

Hawaii

image Kauai. December, 2010, Bob Crew and I went for about ten days and had a great time. The weather was cloudy a lot, but that meant cool nights (except for one), and we still got plenty of sun. Mostly we drove around the island looking for birds. I say around, but no road does that so we did the crescent a couple of times.

Northwest Adventures

image The Beach. Weather in fall, 2008 had not been the typical fine fall weather, so when a few days are predicted one must take advantage. Sunday Oct 26 I went to the coast, got a room at Ocean Shores, and stopped at a beach on the way to Pacific Beach to visit a friend. Monday I hit Bottle Beach, a famous bird-watching spot on the south side of Grays Harbor, and enjoyed the rest of the day at Tokeland, Westport and beaches in between. Tuesday more beach visits and then home.

image EWash, Idaho, Montana. Earlier in fall 2008, the weather folks predicted four good days and I'd been itching to get back to the Pend Orielle River valley for many years, so early one Sunday, off I went. Once there, the Idaho panhandle and Montana were not far. I fell in love with the place all over again.

image Semiahmoo. January 2008 was one of those pristine winter days when the skies have been cleared by rain and no clouds are in sight, a good day to go to Semiahmoo Spit in Blaine. Located in Puget Sound near the US/Canadian border, it is a great place for winter birding and always worth taking in the scenery.

The combination of stormy weather and late spring made the trip go a lot faster than I had hoped. Still, I had a very nice visit with my cousins, Patt & Bill, in Virginia, I saw lots of country I had not seen before, and I did see many birds.

Trip Report pretty much as sent day by day via email while on the road. The table views of photos correspond fairly closely to the day by day reports, and since each opens in its own tab or window, it's easy to switch back and forth as you go.

Texas, spring 08

image In spring 2008, I took another driving trip to Texas, this time for birding and butterflying in south Texas, and to visit a cousin in Houston.

I drove down through Salt Lake City and New Mexico without stopping for sight seeing, then made birding stops in the Texas panhandle and along the way into Houston. While in Houston we went to the Cockrell Butterfly Center and Anahuac NWR. I met a friend at Hobby airport and we headed down the coast.

We saw lots of birds and a few butterflies, but unfortunately were about two weeks early for the best bird migration. Weather conditions were very dry, but fairly cool for south Texas with overcast mornings giving way to sunny and hot afternoons.

From the coast we headed up the Rio Grande valley to Big Bend National Park, then north.

Through the Southwest to Texas, spring 07

image In spring 2007, I took my first long distance driving trip in a long time. I wanted to see Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks on the way to meet a cousin in Dallas to visit with her brother and family. From there we planned to tour a bit in Oklahoma to visit friends and relatives and to see the country that came to be home to one of the many Cash clans.
I left my cousin in Oklahoma City and on the way back stopped at Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verde National Park, and finally Salt Lake for some bird watching.
