My map indicates about 27 miles of dirt road to connect with a paved road leading to Fort Defiance, which is south near Window Rock, just north of Gallup. I stopped in Window Rock to get lunch supplies but unfortunately did not have my wits about me sufficiently to take pictures. I even missed Window Rock itself assuming it sticks out there. It's the second town I've been in (after Taholah, WA) that is so entirely Indian that I felt out of place. I found an AM station broadcasting in Din, the language of the Dineh as the Navahos call themselves.
